29-week Doctor's Visit

I saw the doctor again today -- the first of my weekly appointments. All continues to look good. I only gained a pound this week, but I am now measuring 41 weeks. That would be one week overdue with a singleton. I definitely feel like I'm full-term pregnant.

My doctor says he's happy to have a chance to be nitpicky with me at 29 weeks with triplets, and today he was. While I passed the glucose tolerance (diabetes) test, it was borderline, so he wants me to cut back on my sugar. I've eaten enough ice cream to last me a lifetime, so no loss there! And, my hemoglobin was 10.5 and he'd like to to be 11, so he gave me an iron supplement.

My blood pressure is staying nice and low and there are no other signs of complications. The doc expects to see 3.5 lb. babies at next week's ultrasound. We're hoping for that and, of course, to still see three babies that are all the same size.

We can almost see the light at the end of this tunnel now, so keep praying that everyone remains healthy and we grow these babies big and strong before we have to deliver.

Hi Christy,
I have been enjoying following your progress on your blog. I had some thoughts I wanted to share with the reduction of sugar instructions from your Dr. Just as a reminder (and you probably know this), blood sugar is not just from sugar, but any carbohydrates. You might consider watching other forms of carbohydrates (pasta, potatoes, carrots, corn, sweet peas). I took a very good class at Clarian about nutrition and gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with Henry at Clarian North (it was free, but I had to be referred by my Dr). It recommended that I eat 2 carb choices for breakfast (15 g carbs = 1 carb choice), 1-2 for a morning snack, 3 for lunch, 1-2 for afternoon snack, 4 for dinner, and 1-2 more for an evening snack. Maybe your carb needs would be different. The dietitians strongly recommended not eliminating carbs altogether or going much below the recommendations as one will metabolize other materials for energy (I think maybe fats) and end up with ketones in your urine, which they said was not healthy for moms or babies.
Just some thoughts,
Best of luck,
Beth Kramer

Hi Christy! I'm "the other quad mom" in your MOMs group, and I've recently read your entire blog. :) I am so excited that you have made it to 29 weeks and are expecting to see such big babies at your next visit! I am only at 15 weeks, but your success gives me hope. :) Will be checking back often to see how you and the trips are coming along!
