Amelia and Bella

We have a special visitor today. Bella is one of my co-worker's little dog, and she is spending the night. Amelia went crazy when Bella arrived! She was jumping up and down and squealing, and Bella was equally excited. I think Bella got tired of Amelia sooner than Amelia got tired of Bella.

We put Bella in her cage when we were trying to get Amelia ready for bed, and Amelia sat in front of the cage and cried. She wanted Bella to come out and play. So after Amelia put on her jammies and had her bedtime snack we let Bella out to play a bit. The poor dog spent most of the time hiding behind my feet or Jeff's. She was all played out!

We had Amelia put Bella to bed so we could convince her to go to bed, too. She put Bella in her cage and gave her a treat. Then she sat down in front of the cage and read Bella a book.

Let me interpret a little bit. The book is called "No No, Yes Yes." Amelia's reading about "No no finger up the nose," and "No no eating the puppy food," (really, that's part of the book) and "Yes yes sit on potty," and "No no bonk on the head. Yes yes share toys." Then she tells Bella good night.

What a stitch!

Wordful Wednesday: Amelia and Bella

This is Bella and Amelia.

Amelia had just turned two in this picture. (I can't believe how little she was!) Bella is a friend's puppy, and she came to stay with us for a weekend.

Amelia LOVED Bella. In fact, after we kept Bella, Amelia named a stuffed puppy after her. That was the very first stuffed animal she ever named, and it's still one of few with a name.

But when Amelia found out that Bella was only visiting...

...she was very, very sad.

Doesn't that face just break your heart?

Amelia, don't tell Daddy I said this, but maybe someday (once everyone else in the house is potty-trained!) we can get a Bella of our own.

Amelia and Tootsie

Last weekend Amelia and I went to visit our friends Rachel and Greg and their dog, Tootsie. Well, I went to visit with Rachel and Greg. Amelia just wanted to play with Tootsie!

Tootsie and Amelia

If you've been reading along for a while, you'll remember when we dogsat for Bella and Amelia had to read the puppy a bedtime story. That was almost a year ago, and Amelia still talks about Bella.

So, she was very excited to go see Tootsie. Amelia knew we were going to go after naptime, so she kept asking and asking if it was time for her nap yet. And as soon as she got up, she was ready to hit the road to see the puppy.

Judging from this video, I think both Amelia and Tootsie had a great time. And by all reports, Amelia wore poor Tootsie out completely!

"Run, Tootsie, run!"

Thanks, Rachel and Greg, for having us over and letting Amelia play with Tootsie. All the way home she talked about how Tootsie was going to come visit us at our house, and Bella, too. I'm sure we'll be hearing about Tootsie for a long, long time!

We're not ready to add a dog to this family just yet, but I'm sure the incessant asking will begin before too long. If we do get a dog, it had better be a herd dog. I need help keeping this gang in line!

Amelia's New Baby Jesus

We've been talking a lot about the Baby Jesus as we get ready for Christmas. We have our nativity set up on the mantel, well out of reach of little hands, and Amelia has this very cute soft nativity that she can handle as much as she wants.

She's been playing with all the pieces, asking which is Jesus' mom and which is his dad, marching the camel and donkey around the room, and flapping the wings right off the angel.

Today she asked me for a Band-aid for Baby Jesus. "She has an owie."

I went and got a Band-aid, expecting her to present me with the Baby Jesus from her nativity set to patch up. Instead she presented me with the baby doll she got for Christmas last year.

I asked, "Where's the Baby Jesus?"

"Right here," said Amelia. "She has an owie." (Yep. SHE.)

I took her baby doll, previously only known as Baby, from her. "This baby?"

"Yes," said Amelia emphatically. "Baby Jesus. Say 'Gee-zuss.' Isn't that a good name, Mom?"

Chuckling, I agreed that it was.

Amelia, like most kids, has a pretty good collection of stuffed animals and dolls. But very, very few of them have names. For the longest time just two stuffed dogs had names. One was a bright yellow poodle pup that Amelia got right after we kept a friend's puppy for the weekend. The live puppy was Bella, so the stuffed puppy became Bella. The other came from our neighbors, who gave Amelia a stuffed pup that looked just like their dog. Their dog is named Carmel, so naturally, the stuffed pup became Carmel, too.

In the last month, another stuffed dog has gotten a name: Peanut. Now, apparently we have a new addition to the Named status. Baby has been officially named Baby Jesus.

I can't wait to see if this one lasts. And I have a sneaking suspicion it will lead to more church stories (like the ones about Samuel and the Pledge of Allegiance and the nuns) down the road.
