Wordful Wednesday: Old Pregnancy Pics

Recently I was having trouble getting my camera card to download to the computer. So Jeff grabbed another camera card to see if the problem was the card or the computer. Turned out it was the original 16 MB card that came with the camera we owned before this one.

It only had six pictures on it, including this blast from the past:

This was taken on Amelia's due date, May 9, 2006. That girl didn't arrive for another two weeks. I have no idea how big around I was in this photo, but I know I gained 31 pounds in that pregnancy.

But hold on to your hats. Compare that with this:

This was taken three days before the boys were born, when I was 36 weeks pregnant. I had gained 40 pounds and measured 49 inches around my "waist." The day I delivered I had gained another two pounds and officially measured 48 1/2 inches around.

Amelia weighed 8 1/2 pounds, and the boys weighed a combined 16 1/2 pounds. But boy did all those arms and legs ever take up a lot of extra room!

For a real kick, check out the post where I compared the size of my pregnant-with-triplets stomach with an exercise ball, or the video of me showing off my belly on the day I delivered. Whew!

Wordful Wednesday: The Big, Big, Big News

In honor of the second anniversary of that fateful day in 2008 when we learned that we were having triplets, here's how we told our family we were expecting again:

Amelia, 22 months, and on her way to becoming the BIGGEST of big sisters.

We just showed up to meet family at the water park with Amelia in this t-shirt. It took a minute for the news to sink in. And amazingly, I was there in my regular swimsuit, 10 weeks pregnant with the triplets. A couple weeks later and I never could have pulled that off!

Looking back, I cannot believe I survived the shock of learning I had triplets on the way when I already had one under 2. Then again, it was so surreal to be expecting three babies that I'm not sure I fully believed it until we delivered.

Despite all the fears and concerns we had that day, everything has worked out. I sailed through my pregnancy, Amelia has taken her uber-big-sister role in stride, the boys are all healthy, and although every day has its challenges (and some days many, many challenges!) overall life is good. And we are very blessed.

This post is part of Wordful Wednesday over at Seven Clown Circus.

Unanswered Prayers

Dear Sam, Isaac and Alex,

Happy birthday, my boys. I cannot believe that you are one year old today. We celebrated with cupcakes, playtime, and lots of cuddles for sick little ones.

It seems fitting that we spent much of today holding you. This time last year we couldn't hold you enough. Your little heads fit in the palm of Daddy's hand, and you fit neatly on my arm between my elbow and wrist.

Today I have been thinking about your birth, and the entire amazing experience of being pregnant with the three of you all at once. And I keep coming back to one thing over and over.

I remember talking to the nurse at the doctor's office after we had blood work done to confirm the pregnancy. She told me that my hormone level was very high and that it was probably multiples.

I laughed her off. "You told me that with Amelia, too. My hormones must just run high."

She responded, "I thought of that, so I checked. Your hormone level is more than three times as high as it was with Amelia at about this same point in your pregnancy."

I paused. "So, twins?"

She paused. "At least twins."

What? I took a couple deep breaths. When I got off the phone I started searching for information on multiple pregnancies and hormone levels. I recalculated over and over when we had gotten pregnant. Everything pointed to the fact that my hormone levels were off the charts for twins, but in range for triplets.

I confess that I prayed for twins. Triplets just boggled my mind. Twins, I could handle. But three babies at once? My prayers were feverish and fervent and foolish.

And God, in His infinite wisdom, did not answer them. He knew that there should be three of you. He knew that your Daddy and I were born for this purpose. He knew that all three of you had a special place in this world.

He knew.

How small is our fear beside His greatness.

Even before you were born, I could not have parted with one of you. Before we ever met you, we knew you and loved you.

There's a song that says:

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.
Remember when you're talking to the man upstairs,
that just because He doesn't answer doesn't mean He don't care.
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.

I thank God every day that each of you is here.

Sam, with your wild red hair and the best belly laugh. Isaac, with your fearless attitude and soulful eyes. Alex, with your loud voice and ever-present smile.

You are answers to a prayer I could never fathom praying. A prayer that only God could have known. And I am so grateful that He gave each of you to us.

I love you Sam.

I love you Isaac.

I love you Alex.

Always,

Mama

The Infamous Exercise Ball Post

It's impossible to believe that one year ago today I was 36 weeks pregnant with Sam, Isaac and Alex and taking pictures comparing my belly to an exercise ball.

Of course, we didn't even know if we were having boys or girls, then. We were just thrilled to have made it to 36 weeks with big healthy babies and no complications.

Well, I was thrilled that the end of the pregnancy was in sight. So thrilled. Moved to tears really.

Because I was big. BIG, people! My "waist" was more than 49 inches around -- just 14 inches shy of my 5' 2" in height -- and I measured more than 52 weeks pregnant. I was overflowing with sympathy for mama elephants and all other large animals that have long gestations.

But mostly, I was just overflowing everywhere.

And now?

Now I am running everywhere!

I'm probably moving more weight every day than I was then. The difference is that now it's light weights, lots of reps. And I've got the guns to prove it, too. Watch out Michelle Obama, you've got nothing on me!

If you've never seen the pics of 36 weeks vs. the exercise ball, go check it out. It's quite a sight to behold, and good for a laugh to boot.

34 Weeks Pregnant Revisited

It is surreal for to me to think about what life was like at this time last year.

I was 34 weeks pregnant, with no complications and headed for the max of 37 weeks my doctor would allow me to carry. I had been off work for just two weeks, but was not on bed rest.

I was nearing my max of 48 1/2 inches around, and I was slow as an elephant on Ambien, but still moving!

Here's the glamour shot:

Sept. 21, 2008 ~ 34 weeks pregnant with the triplets.

Our 34-week ultrasound showed the babies weighing in at a combined 15 lbs., 13 oz. of babies.

Baby A (Sam) - 5 lb. 4 oz.
Baby B (Isaac) - 5 lb. 3 oz.
Baby C (Alex) - 5 lb. 6 oz.

When we delivered 16 lbs., 8 oz. of baby boys two weeks later because the ultrasound showed Baby A (Sam) had quit growing, their weights were:

Baby A (Sam) - 5 lb. 4 oz.
Baby B (Isaac) - 5 lb. 3 oz.
Baby C (Alex) - 6 lb. 1 oz.

True to form, Alex sure ate his fill those last two weeks! He's still our champion eater.

And if the photos make me shake my head in disbelief, this video of the babies moving and grooving at 34 weeks really amazes me. I can't believe my body ever contained these three active babies, and for so long!

Busy, Busy

Sorry things have been a little quiet on the blog this week. We've been busy getting ready for an early celebration of the boys' FIRST BIRTHDAY!

Can you believe it? Sam, Isaac and Alex turned 11 months old on the 8th. And we are celebrating with friends and neighbors and volunteers this weekend.

The time has flown by, and it's impossible to believe that this time last year we were celebrating making the milestone of 32 weeks and I was carrying 12 pounds of baby.

I can't even wrap my head around what my body did during my triplet pregnancy. It's just surreal to me, even though I went through it -- ALL the way through it.

Who can believe we've gone from this:

Isaac, Alex and Sam ~ 3 days old, October 10, 2008

To this?

Isaac, Alex and Sam enjoy story time with Amelia. September, 2009

The year has flown by, and I know it's only just the beginning. Already I have to admit that I have toddlers, not babies. And while it is a lot of fun, it's a little sad, too.

Don't grow up too fast, Sam, Isaac and Alex. Mama would like to keep you little for a short while, OK?

One Year Blogiversary

One year ago today I started this blog with a pretty low-key post.
I started it in large part because so many people wanted updates on the triplet pregnancy. And, I wanted to capture everything that was going on in our lives because I knew this would probably be the only baby book the boys ever have.

At the time, I had no idea how much I would enjoy writing here, first for myself and my family and friends, and now for fellow moms, moms of multiples and random visitors from across the globe. I had no idea how many new friends I would make, and how many fellow triplet moms I would connect with.

A lot certainly has changed in a year!

THEN:

Who knew it would be three boys?

Fifteen weeks pregnant ~ May 15, 2008

Amelia ~ May 2008

Amelia ~ May 2008 ~ SOOOO big! (But really, still small.)

And NOW:

Amelia ~ May 2009

Sam, Alex, and Isaac ~ May 2009

This blog has enriched my life...our lives. Thank you for being part of the journey so far. I hope you'll keep enjoying the ride!

Flashback: Telling the Family

One year ago about this time we were telling family that we were pregnant, and later, after the first trimester was over and the risks of losing one of the babies dropped considerably, that it was triplets.

We were able to tell Jeff's parents in person that we were pregnant again by putting the message on Amelia when we saw them at Easter.

Proud big-sister-to-be.

We decided to share the triplet news by video call so we could see Grandma and Grandpa D.'s faces. So, we sent this ultrasound picture for them to open during the call.

The babies say hello to the family.

Jeff's mom looked at the picture and wanted to know what three parts of the baby she was looking at. Jeff said, "Not three parts, Mom. THREE BABIES." That elicited a round of "WHAT?" from everyone, and a lot of commotion ensued. Mouths were hanging open in disbelief, and Grandma D. kept covering her face with her hands, she was so excited and shocked.

We, of course, had (mostly) adjusted to the news by then, so we really enjoyed seeing everyone else's reactions.

Jeff and I talked to my parents on the phone, but we told most of my family by email. I believe one of my brothers summed up what everyone else was thinking when he sent an email that said "holy smokes!" (Editor's note: I had to clean that up since this is a family blog!)

I waited a couple more weeks before I told my office that I wasn't just pregnant -- I was pregnant with triplets. I worked with mostly women so the news brought lots of squeals and a general "ohmigosh" reaction. The best though, was when a male colleague wandered by just after I made my announcement and wanted to know what all of the hubbub was about. Someone pointed at me and yelled, "Three babies!" He just stood there with his mouth open and finally said, "In there? Really? Where are you hiding them?"

I certainly wasn't able to hide them for long!

Interview with ME!

Helene over at I'm Living Proof God Has a Sense of Humor got me in on this bit of fun. A fellow blogging mama interviewed her, so she decided to interview some of her readers. Here are her questions and my answers:

1) Tell me your first gut reaction when you learned you were having triplets.

Honestly, my first reaction was that the room suddenly got very hot and I thought I was going to throw up. You can read about it here and here.

2) How did you you and your husband meet?

Jeff and I met when we were 15. We were both members of a Catholic Youth Council. Our first date was to my junior prom.

3) What's the best piece of advice in general you've ever received?

I can't choose between these two.

From my dad: "Pick your friends, don't let them pick you." That one kept me out of a lot of trouble, especially in college.

From my mom: "This, too, shall pass." That one used to really tick me off, because my crisis of the moment was always VERY IMPORTANT and not to be dismissed. With age and maturity, I realized that was not a dismissal of my crisis, but a reminder that everything was not earth-shattering, and everything, with time, changes.

4) If you could have a conversation with anyone (dead or alive), who would you choose and why? What would you ask him/her?

I'd love to talk with Amelia Earhart because she defied the norm of what it was to be a woman in her era. I'd ask her how she felt about breaking so many boundaries. How did men of her generation treat her before and after she became so famous? Did she ever want to be married and have children, as was expected of women in her day? What does she think about how far women have come now? What would her advice to young women of today be?

5) You check your mailbox today and find an envelope in it addressed to you with a check for a million dollars....how would you spend it?

Right now, a big chunk would have to go to diapers and formula...and wine for mommy & daddy. Maybe even a winery?

OK, seriously, my first move would be to fill my kids' college funds. Then I'd go for a house remodel (I love my neighborhood and wouldn't want to move) to add a larger kitchen and great room, and two more bedrooms. Then I'd pay off the van and probably replace my husband's well-used car. I'd also love to have a vacation fund so we could go visit family any time we wanted. And someday, when the kids are a little older, take some big vacations, like going to rural Italy or France for a month.

Now...I would love to interview you and you and you. So here is what you do:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."

2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. (I get to pick the questions - make sure I can reach you by e-mail or leave your e-mail in your comment).

3. You then update your blog with the answers to the questions.

4. You include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.

5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

So come on--let's get to know each other better. And do not fear potential questions--I'll play nice.

What a Difference a Year Makes

One year ago today we found out we were expecting not one bundle of joy, but THREE! Our reaction to the news was the topic of my second post on this blog, way back in May 2008.

My sister probably put it best when she described our feelings about expecting triplets as "manic." Sometimes we were thrilled and excited, and other times we were just plain freaking out.

The first moments after we found out about the triplets set the tone for the pregnancy. We were relieved and happy that all three babies looked great, but were immediately hit with the sobering news that there was about a 60% chance that we'd lose at least one of the babies in the first trimester. Then the discussion turned to trying to carry the babies to 24 weeks, which was minimum viability. No one ever brought that up during my first pregnancy, that's for sure! It was truly like a roller coaster ride -- scary and thrilling all at once.

But God works in mysterious ways, and here we are one year later, enjoying many blessings. We were blessed with an uncomplicated pregnancy of 36 weeks and 3 days, just shy of full term at 37 weeks. (That's not to say it was easy!) We delivered big, healthy babies and just one spent some time in the NICU for a minor issue. We were blessed to get to know better so many wonderful people who wanted to help with the boys in those first months, and we were blessed to have so many of our family members come to help, too.

I'll never forget my first sight of those three little sacs on the ultrasound screen. Even in my moment of panic, I was relieved and overjoyed to see three tiny hearts beating away madly. I fell in love with my three boys right then and there, and I can't imagine life without them.

Samuel: You were our Hercules baby, holding up your brothers for all those months. You have become a real charmer with your red hair, big blue eyes and sweet smile. You know how to flirt with the best of them!

Isaac: You endured being squeezed in the middle. You are a real talker these days, cooing and gurgling at everyone. You were appropriately named, as Isaac means "laughter" in Hebrew, and you are the giggliest baby of all.

Alexander: You entered the world as the youngest, but biggest of my babies. And you have a big heart to go with your stature. You are our joyful, jolly Buddha baby, bringing smiles to everyone you meet.

The greatest blessing of all is to have Sam, Isaac and Alex as part of our lives. Our arms may be fuller than we anticipated, but our hearts are too.

Miss Manners, or Should That Be Mis-manners?

This post has been brewing for a long time, really ever since I first started to share with the world that I was pregnant with triplets. I'm motivated to put it out there now as the one-year anniversary of this journey rolls around.

I realize that triplets are not an everyday occurrence, and I am getting used to the fact that we will create a scene wherever we go. But what I cannot get used to (and refuse to, for the sake of civility, at a minimum!), is how total strangers will now ask me how my children were conceived.

The question comes in many forms: Did you use drugs? Do multiples run in your family? Did you do IVF? Did you use fertility treatments? Are they natural?

(The last is my personal favorite as it gives me the opportunity to respond with a snappy, "No, they are made of space-age polymer. It's machine washable and very durable.")

However it is phrased, what everyone is really asking is how we conceived our kids. That question is pretty personal even for close friends and family, but complete strangers? Grocery store cashiers, waitresses and other moms at the pediatrician's office? It's the very definition of rude.

I am not naive, but I was taken aback by this the first few times. I guess I thought there was still some civility and common courtesy in the world. Do people really not realize how rude their questions are? Miss Manners would have a fit. Oh, and if you find yourself starting a question with, "Do you mind if I ask..." rest assured that it is a question you shouldn't be asking.

There are plenty of families with multiples who are out there telling (and selling!) their stories for all to hear. Go watch TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" or check out the latest appearance by octomom Nadya Suleman if you want intimate details about someone's multiple conception. Unfortunately, too many people take the sharing of these stories as license to ask the rest of us multi-mamas (and papas) anything they want to know.

Don't get me wrong. I have no objection to Jon and Kate Gosselin or any other family sharing their story. That is their choice. If they didn't want the world to know, they wouldn't be on television. But their stories shouldn't make it open season on every family with multiples who just wants to take their kids to the zoo or get the grocery shopping done.

Since we had our triplets, we have gotten to know a lot of parents of multiples. Some conceived their multiples without fertility assistance and some didn't, but all of them have to deal with this question. Everyone has different ways of handling it.

One dad of triplets likes to respond with a perfectly deadpanned, "I have super sperm." He says it never fails to end the conversation.

Some moms who dealt with infertility, like to respond with "Why do you ask?" This leaves the door open for a conversation about struggling with infertility, if the person asking is going through that struggle themselves or knows someone who is. It is also designed to embarrass the person who is asking because they are just curious, though I doubt that ever works. If they had that kind of sensitivity and manners, they wouldn't ask in the first place.

When I'm feeling nice I respond by telling people that I am a twin. I have a fraternal twin sister, and it is relevant to the conversation, but it doesn't really answer the question. It's a little like answering the question, "Do you like dogs?" by saying, "My grandma has a parakeet." But, people generally draw their own conclusions and move on to politer, more appropriate conversation.

When I'm feeling less benevolent, I like to take the opportunity to answer in a way that will make said stranger think twice about asking anyone else that question. It goes like this:

Stranger: [Insert insensitive, inappropriate question about my triplets' conception here.]

Me: Well, since we really don't know each other, it's a little personal to ask how my babies were conceived, but if you must know. My daughter had severe acid reflux and was a horrible sleeper until she was 18 months old. When she finally started to sleep through the night, my husband and I were just full of energy, so one afternoon...

Generally, the uncomfortable TMI (too much information) look comes across the stranger's face and you can see them wishing they had never asked the question. Which is exactly the result I'm after. Perhaps, at a minimum, I've made them think twice about asking the question of someone else. If nothing else, I feel better.

The short variation on this theme is to smile sweetly and say, "If my husband isn't questioning how they were conceived, why should you?"

[Sigh.] Miss Manners has a lot of work to do.

In the Beginning

One year ago today, I found out I was pregnant again. Jeff and I were thrilled at the news. Little did we know that this was what God had planned for us!

The Triplet Weight Loss Plan

Perhaps this will be the latest rage in diets. Gain 42 pounds, deliver 16 1/2 pounds of baby. Follow with three months of 24/7 activity feeding babies, nursing babies and walking around carrying babies that are getting heavier and heavier (35 pounds combined now). Add to that limited time to eat or cook anything to eat.

The plan requires enormous stamina, but the results are fantastic. My legs got a great workout carrying all that weight during pregnancy. My arms are getting a great workout now carrying these 10- and 12-pound "weights." And thanks to the many miles I'm putting on walking babies, I'm wearing a pant size that I haven't worn in 10 years. Now if all this extra skin will magically shrink back to my pre-triplet days, I'll be in the best shape of my life!

Heaven knows I'd better be in great shape to keep up with these boys...

The Latest Weigh In

Apparently a really cute picture of the boys in their overalls isn't enough for my reading public. Having been chastised for a lack of posts (you all can thank Sarah for that), I'm getting it in gear today. But, hello! Triplet mom here! Sometimes you'll have to give me a little break.

In today's triplet news, the boys slept until 6:30 a.m. Go team! They are settling back into the 3-hour schedule, after a couple days of needing to eat more often to accommodate a growth spurt. Growing is good!

Isaac has apparently decided it's time to catch up with his brothers and has been finishing 5-oz. bottles today. It's been a rarity for him to this point, but he's eaten 5 oz. or darn close to it at every feeding today. C'mon little guy, you can do it!

At last week's weigh-in we had:

Sam - 12 lb. 2 oz.
Isaac - 10 lb. 7 oz.
Alex - 12 lb. 7 oz.

Everyone has now doubled his birth weight, and Sam's catching up to Alex fast!

Isaac is the most verbal of the group now. Perhaps he's compensating for his size? He pulls his giggle out on a regular basis, too. Alex will laugh when you work on him, though he'll smile at the drop of a hat. Sam has gotten to be a big smiler now, but we're still really working him for a laugh.

More pictures to come soon.

Happy Belated Birthday to Me

Yesterday was my birthday. It was a great birthday, (well, except for the trip to the dentist) with four beautiful little "presents" in the house. Amelia sang "Happy Birthday" to me. Well, technically she sang, "Happy birthday to us," but close enough.

On Monday, Jeff took me out to dinner thanks to Sarah and Jamie who came and watched the kids for the evening. The restaurant was packed! I had no idea it would be so crazy on a Monday, especially as today is New Year's Eve. The meal was disappointing, but as I said to Jeff, it was really about being out of the house and enjoying each other's company. I told the waiter the meal wasn't very good when he came to ask if we were done and when the bill came he had comped half of it. That was a nice surprise.

The boys are 12 weeks old today, and having been working on a birthday present of their own for Mommy -- sleeping through the night! We aren't quite there, but getting closer. They have been pushing their 1:30 feeding to 3:30 or even 4:30 a.m. since the day after Christmas.

Today's weigh-in showed the boys at:

Samuel - 11 lbs. 1 oz.
Isaac - 9 lb. 13 oz.
Alex - 11 lb. 11 oz.

Everyone's gaining weight well, though Isaac's still got some catching up to do! They are all smiling and working on rolling over. We're done with the chicken pox, except for the last of the healing for Sam. Thank heavens that's over, and it only took five weeks!

As we close out 2008, I have to say that this has been an amazing year. We certainly had no idea what was in store for us at this time last year. We had an incredibly healthy triplet pregnancy that gave us three big, beautiful boys. And if that weren't enough, their birth has brought so many new and wonderful people into our lives, and strengthened our bond with many of the people we already knew. The year has definitely brought us multiple blessings, and each and every one of you can count yourselves among those blessings.

May you ALL be blessed with multiple blessings in the New Year.

Our Due Date Has Arrived

To my boys:

Today, November 2, is your due date. We are so blessed that you are already here as big, healthy three-week-olds. Today Sam weighs 7 lbs. 2 oz., Isaac weighs 6 lbs. 7 oz., and Alex weighs 8 lbs. 1 oz.

On your birthday, in the short time we had between the doctor's appointment and the C-section, I sat quietly with you one last time. I wanted to savor those last few moments of having you inside of me. I wanted to relish the last few baby kicks and contemplate for just a minute the miracles that God and I had been creating together for all those months.

God knit your bones together inside of me, and, as with so many of His gifts, I was but the vessel for His work. It is indeed a wondrous thing.

I'm so thrilled to have carried you safely inside of me for so long. Now you've taken your place in this world -- a place that God determined for you long ago.

No matter what the future holds for you, my three little angels, know that your father and I will always be there to hold your hands, wipe your tears, share your joys, and encourage you along the way.

Welcome to the world my darlings. We're so very glad you're here.

Love,

Mommy

Before and After

For months I've been posting pictures of my ever-expanding waist. So now, if you'll indulge me for just a moment, here's a picture of the shrinkage that has occurred.

On the day I delivered the boys, I had gained 42 pounds and measured 48 1/2 inches around. When I left the hospital, I was already 4o pounds lighter. (Remember, I delivered 16 1/2 pounds of baby!) When I was at the doctor's office last Friday, 16 days after delivery, I weighed 3 pounds less than when I got pregnant.
But, for the sake of comparison, I'll leave you with this video, which we took about an hour before we went to the hospital to have the boys. I affectionately refer to it as, "How Do You Steer This Thing?"

It's a Good Day for a Birthday...or Three

I just finished up at the doctor's office and he decided it's time for us to finally meet these babies. This morning's ultrasound showed that Baby A is starting to lag behind a bit in growth, which is not cause for big concern. But, at 36 weeks and 3 days, there's no point in waiting any longer either.

We'll be heading to the hospital about 12:30 this afternoon and the delivery is scheduled for 3 p.m. Please pray that all goes well with the delivery, that the anesthetic is effective this time, and that the babies are all strong and healthy.

We've got someone on standby to post the delivery news on the blog, so we'll try to get the word out as soon as we can.

Thanks to all of you for following our adventure so far and for keeping us in your prayers. We appreciate each and every of you.

Early Morning Musings

Had to turn the blogging duties over to Jeff last night as I headed to bed early, early after a Vicodin to ease the pain of a newly dislocated rib. Clearly we are running out of room here! It's amazing what good drugs can do for you though.

Right now the babies are having a dance party, which I am watching with both awe and amazement. I've seen these little ones in ultrasounds a dozen times or more, and I still can't believe that there are three babies in there.

I remember the first "WHAT?!" ultrasound where they were just little tiny spots with furiously beating hearts. We watched them grow through the tadpole stage and turn into three little people who would wave their arms and kick their legs, and even suck their thumbs. As they grew, we saw tiny faces in profile and watched them kick each other as space got even tighter. And more recently, they have gotten so big and crowded that it's hard to tell what's what and who's who.

And still, despite all the sneak peeks, my size, and the seismic baby activity, I find it hard to believe that there are three babies in there. What an enormous, and overwhelming, blessing!

The ultrasounds can show us lots of things, and it is wonderful technology that allows us to "see" our babies before they arrive. But, it can't tell us who these babies are or show us whether they look like mom or dad, or perhaps have great-grandpa's red hair. That only comes at birth, and I am looking forward to that moment when I can hold all three of these precious babies in my arms and begin to get to know them.

Don't know much about you,
Don't know who you are.
We've been doing fine without you,
But, we could only go so far.

Don't know why you chose us,
Were you watching from above?
Is there someone there that knows us
Said we'd give you all our love?

Will you laugh just like your mother?
Will you sigh like your old man?
Will some things skip a generation
Like I've heard they often can?

Are you a poet or a dancer?
A devil or a clown?

36 Unbelievable Weeks

It's almost impossible to believe that we're at 36 weeks today with no complications, one minor complaint (the itchy rash, which has cleared up), and the first contractions just a few nights ago. (None since, by the way.)

I thought I had surely reached my capacity for expansion, but I am still growing. Today I am 49 inches around and I have gained a total of 40 lbs. The babies should all be right around 6 lbs. now, though their growth could well be slowing down as it's pretty crowded in there.

Ever since my mom came she's said I look just like I always have from the back, but from the front I look like I swallowed an exercise ball. Hmmm... Could I possibly be that big? She also says the pictures just don't do it justice. So, this week, just for fun, we took a few pictures for comparison. You be the judge.

36 weeks and still growing!
Basketball? Maybe months ago.
Amelia's large rubber ball? Closer!

Exercise ball? Yikes!
